America, this is the fourth Memorial Day since the war started. There will be grand speeches made by those who haven't been, those who won't go, and those who want to profit from the people who did and didn't return. It's 120 degrees, I'm wearing body armor, and looking for a fight.
At least it'll give me something to do besides sweat. Ask yourself these questions:
1) Why does the opposition party continue to claim that symbolic gestures are meaningful, when both sides know they are bluffing and the administration refuses to admit error?
2) What possible good can a "War Czar" do? Don't we already have both a Secretary of State and a Secretary of Defense? Prior to the end of the Second World War the Department of Defense was called the Department of War. What has changed? Why invent another position just to blame them when they fail for your mistakes?
3) Why is Iran being dragged into this fray? After 9/11 the Iranian government reached out in sympathy to the American government, and sternly told Hezbollah that they had better not have been involved. Now, they are being dragged into this mess as the administration yet again attempts to blame its failures on a third party.
4) How many Americans do not know or care about the three soldiers taken prisoner south of Baghdad? One was found dead yesterday, the fate of the others is unknown.
Where is the outrage? Where are the yellow ribbons now? The vast majority of Americans will never wear body armor, will never be so tired that time blends together, so hungry they see things that aren't there. They will never be shot at, will never try to kill their fellow man, will never try to build a life and a family in a war zone, will never bury a friend or a son or daughter, will never vote. Will never vote. What price this sacrifice?
I do this for Todd Bryant.
